What is a Sip'N'Puff?

Some of our members cannot use their arms or hands. Can we imagine a quadriplegic sailor sailing without help? The Sip'N'Puff technology allows this feat. Find out how.

Sip 'n' puff (SNP) is an assistive technology used to send signals to a device using air pressure by "breathing in" or "breathing out" on a straw, tube or "wand". It is primarily used by people who do not have the use of their hands. It is commonly used to control a motorized wheelchair by quadriplegics with severely damaged spinal cords or people with ALS. In the field of sailing, this device is installed close to the sailor, on his vest, to allow him to guide his boat. This is how René Dallaire, the founder of AQVA, was introduced to the pleasures of sailing!
